Hello all, I went to Hebburn Newtown Infants/Juniors from 68 to 74 and to say me Mams cooking was bad is the understatement of the year! In other words I LOVED SCHOOL DINNERS=now there's something you don't hear too often, eh? Does anyone remember Mr Stockdale the Head Teacher? Mrs Peverley who hit me over the hand for a spelling mistake in what would now be Reception class! One I'll never forget=school trip to a Sewage Works=can still smell it now. I loved the Newtown School esp the outdoor netty and room dividers that you tripped over on a daily basis. Good old Xmas parties doing the Gay Gordon's and Hokey Cokey my God times have changed.....! The question is, is schooling better now or back then? Oh. it's tapioca. Sago is smoother.

Your a braver person then me, calling your mams cooking like that, but I admire your honesty. I must admit I didn't mind my mams cooking, but what I liked most was, when she baked bread, that was second to none. But have you noticed!, and I might be wrong here, but a lot of the young lads and lasses, don't seem to bake things these days, As for schools being better today, I think thats a very good question, and yes I do think schooling is better today. When I left school, I left with no qualification's, and I think ( and this is only my opinion) was down to bad schooling.

Ar don't panic Colin me mam used to say in the 70's "Eeeh, my cooking's worse than that Wendy Craigs off Butterflies". She's quite proud of her culinary shortfalls as we all have a laugh about it now (wasn't funny at the time though-especially her grey lumpy mash and half cooked yorkshires and gravy with grease on the top). Nay Delia Smith was my mam but she could bake (during bread shortages getting yeast from Walter Wills in the Newtown) bread buns.....mmmmm.....can still remember them warm from the oven. The very same oven we used to warm wa clothes on during the Winter before school! Aye those were the days (pre central heating and sub-zero outside bog brrrr).
